Description

This is an opportunity to join Dr. Reeves and fellow educators to discuss practical strategies for teaching nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation in the dental hygiene program. Dr. Reeves will share his methods used within the Austin Community College District’s dental hygiene program, including approaches to integrating foundational knowledge, equipment use, hazard awareness, and current perspectives on safe and effective administration. Participants will explore instructional challenges, equipment management, safety updates, and calibration strategies to strengthen student competency and confidence.

Objectives:

  • Understand the principles on instruction of nitrous oxide/oxygen sedation.
  • Appreciate how to overcome struggles we have with equipment setup, operation, and breakdown
  • Update safety principles and newer methods for delivery.
  • Develop rubrics that help the students learn and make those same rubrics objective to help with calibration.
  • List some of the patient safety concerns with nitrous oxide sedation and when to
    avoid use of the technology.
  • Understand which textbooks are helpful in establishing a successful nitrous
    oxide/oxygen sedation program.
